With all that being said we just wanted to take this time to say thank you for all your support and we're incredibly excited for all of you to get this product. We put a lot of work into it and we think you'll really like it.

120k and Update on Digital Deck of Stories!
over 3 years ago – Wed, Oct 21, 2020 at 01:31:17 PM

Hello Everyone!

We just hit 120k and we still have another week to go!

We couldn't be more grateful and excited about this project. As you can tell from the last update, we've been working with a lot of people to get this project finished. So to see all of your support means a lot.

With that being said we have a minor update that we wanted to bring up as we get into the last week of the Kickstarter. We've seen a lot of people asking for a digital version of the cards and we wanted to let you know that we're working on a solution now.

We're still hashing out the details of it now, so I can't say much on the topic. But our goal is to get it on the Kickstarter before the campaign ends.

We should have more details on the subject soon, and we'll make sure to have an update about it next week with more information.

Behind the scenes at The Deck of Stories

How the Deck of Stories went from concept to Kickstarter.

Guest update by Aron Murch, 2H Media

Kickstarter is a truly beautiful example of passionate people from around the world working together to bring an idea to life.  As we watch this campaign continue to grow, we are both grateful and humbled to see the support that our backers are showing for the Deck of Stories. With this update, we invite you to take a journey with us behind the scenes to see how our international team of creatives have joined forces to take the Deck of Stories from concept to Kickstarter. We’ll be looking at how a story teller in New Mexico and a publisher in Oregon are able to collaborate with an illustrator in Portugal and a Canadian design agency, as well as the steps that a set of cards go through to transform from pen and paper to a fully illustrated finished product.

The Deck of Stories was created in the following steps:

Genesis

The genesis of the Deck of Stories was an idea brewing in the mind of Jason Russell (thecriticaldice.com). With the goal “to provide resources that make your time around the gaming table more fun,” Jason has been operating Critical Dice TM since November 2017, and has released over 500 story hooks on his Instagram. With the Deck of Stories, Jason formulated the idea of the O.R.C. system to formalize how story hooks can be used in combination to tell elaborate stories that are each unique – not simply pre-generated campaigns.

The relationship between Critical Dice TM and 1985 Games can best be described as a shared vision for more imaginative role playing experiences. When we began working together, the creative energy flowed, and the Deck of Stories continued to evolve. Jeremiah Crofton (1985games.com) brought new ideas to the table and introduced an entirely new card type in the form of NPC cards. Additionally, 1985 Games brought other industry partners to the table to elevate the visual design of the Deck of Stories.

Prototyping

To create a working prototype and refine the text contents of the cards, early versions of the Deck of Stories were printed as plain black and white placeholders, and rough design notes were sketched on grid paper. These concepts were shared with Tavis Maiden (tavismaiden.com), a passionate gamer and talented comic book graphic designer, to create the initial concepts and visual identity for the Deck of Stories. As Tavis worked to create the first round of visuals, Jason and Jeremiah continued to develop the written content of the cards.

Teambuilding

With the visual identity of the Deck of Stories established, and the written content nearing its completion, yet more passionate creatives were introduced to the project. Joao Fiuza (inkognit.com),  Paizo published illustrator and fantasy illustration specialist, was brought onboard to create the stunning character illustrations that would adorn the NPC cards. Additionally, Aron Murch (2h.media), an industry veteran known for his work on licensed board games with Lynnvander Studios, joined the team to take the visual design of the Deck of Stories from concept to finished print files.

Development

With the party assembled, the collaboration could begin in earnest. A cloud-based database was created to track the details of every card from the first Story Card to the last NPC Card. This allowed Jason and Jeremiah to continue adding polish and personality to the text content even as Aron refined and finished the visual design of the cards. With the text content migrated from pen and paper to typed documents, and finally to a centralized database, further collaboration became possible. A variable library was implemented in Adobe Illustrator to allow updated written content to be applied to finished card templates in batches. Utilizing a tech-stack that was purpose built for collaboration enabled creatives in both written and visual content to work together in a rapid, iterative development cycle. What does all this mean for our backers and the finished project? It means that the passion our creative writing team holds for making gaming more fun didn’t get left behind once the visual design began. It means that we were able to complete more revision passes and, in turn, it means that the finished Deck of Stories will have as much polish as possible.

Going Live

Part of our promise to our community is creating transparency and showing how we approach game design. We love what we do and we want to include as many people and new ideas as possible into our work. We do need to keep a few secrets and surprises under our hat as Deck of Stories continues to grow. We can’t wait to share more about our next adventure.

Have questions about the design process? Leave a comment on this update. Members of our team will be checking-back throughout the duration of the campaign.

Forgotten Depths - A Co-Op Dungeon Adventure Game

Combining unique tile-laying exploration and card-driven combat, Forgotten  Depths delivers a quick-playing but substantial experience of discovery and adventure.

1-3 players conspire together, delving through three ecologies to confront the malevolent force residing beneath it all.

To have a hope of success, Heroes must coordinate closely and improve themselves through exploration.  Items must be found, either in Chests or Legendary Locations, and Abilities are bought with the Experience  Points gained through resolving encounters.  These experience Points are in scarce supply, though, and you’ll need to balance between saving them for Abilities, and spending them for the Healing and Keys you’ll also need!

The preparations have been made, the rites and honors performed.  Are you ready to journey into the depths?

There are only two days left in their campaign, so be sure to catch it by heading there NOW!
